Top 6 Things You Can Consider Selling Before A Move & Then Buy Again Later

Top 6 Things You Can Consider Selling Before A Move & Then Buy Again Later

We are talking about a pre-move purge here which is selling household items before moving from your old home to your new house. But you should keep in mind that it does not have to be permanent. Yes, you don’t have to get rid of all of your stuff or even the unnecessary items forever. You can always buy them again.

What purpose does that solve? It simplifies your packing and moving tremendously. It helps you lighten your burden. You will be reducing your overall packing and moving costs as well. It helps you save on commuting and fuel costs and also a lot of money that you would otherwise have to spend on packing materials. Needless to mention, you do not have to hire a moving company for the move.

And let’s face it, you get to shop. Yay!

Selling your household items before moving, especially the ones that you don’t need anymore is going to take a little bit of patience. You will have to make a checklist of all the things that you can sell, do fine without for a few days if need be, and then buy again when you get the time. The following section sheds a bit of light on a few examples:

1. Your Old Appliances

Your Old Appliances

This is a fine opportunity to replace all your old appliances or at least the ones that have been causing trouble. It is quite obvious that some of them had a great run. A lot of them might have already come to the end of their useful life cycle. So instead of packing and transporting them to their new location which is your new house, why don’t you buy new appliances? This way you will be investing in more state-of-the-art equipment that is not just safer but more power-efficient as well.

2. Outdated Furniture Pieces

Outdated Furniture Pieces

Nobody wants outdated furniture pieces in their new home. You don’t want any money to be spent on these pieces or even on packing and moving them to your new house. Instead what you can do is get rid of them and buy new and more eco-friendly furniture pieces and fixtures when you move into your new house.

3. Clothes That You Don’t Wear

Clothes That You Don't Wear

Clothes that you don’t wear anymore or the ones that don’t fit you that well can be gotten rid of as well. So if you have any old shoes or worn-out jewelry, any oversized winter jackets that are too heavy for you, bridal wear, makeup that you find too loud, or any other accessories that you want to get rid of, do that right away.

4. Excess Linens And Towels

You can keep a few towels and bedsheets to wrap a few of the items and belongings that you want to take to your new house. The rest you can just toss them out or probably donate to your preferred charity in your neighborhood. A lot of them can be recycled as well.

5. Exercise Equipment

Exercise Equipment

Exercise equipment is also something that you might want to sell off. You must have a few parts that have gotten rusted over time. There might be a few tools and weights, resistance cables, and similar stuff that you can put up for sale. Exercise equipment is very heavy to carry as well and therefore, it is better to include it in the list of stuff to buy again when moving into your new home instead. It is only going to add to your moving weight otherwise. It is better to get rid of it before you move out and buy a new set in your new home.

6. Those Annoying Toys

Those Annoying Toys

Finally, you have the opportunity to get rid of those annoying squeaky and rackety toys that make such irritating noises. You have always hated them. Get rid of them and your babies won’t even notice. You can always replace them with cuter and less noisy toys after you have moved into your new house. And this time around make sure to soundproof your children’s rooms and invest in a more efficient baby monitor as well.

What About The Things That You Don’t Use Anymore?

Apart from selling the above-mentioned household items before moving to your new home, you will come across a lot of things that you don’t use anymore. It can be your old gadgets such as your laptops, computers, and a few lighting fixtures, wall clocks, old paintings, photo frames, and the like. You may also have a few antique items that you don’t want to keep in your new house. You might be able to get a good price for them if you decide to sell them online.

So basically, anything that you do not use anymore can go to your list of all the things to sell before moving out of your old home. But how would you know whether to keep anything or sell it off?

  • Does It Still Function?

If the item is still functional and using it is not a trouble at all, you might want to consider taking it with you

  • Is It Worth Moving It To Your New Home?

Find out what the entire cost will be to transport that item to your new home. If it is too much, you are probably better off replacing it instead.

  • Do You Have Any Use For It?

This is the most basic question. If you want to carry this item to your new home just out of habit, do not do that. You must have a genuine use for it otherwise you will only be carrying clutter with you that you don’t need.

  • Are You Emotionally Attached To That Item?

If it is a family heirloom or something that was passed on to you by any of your distant relatives, you must have gotten used to it. You are probably attached to it emotionally. Then it makes sense to carry it to your new house.

So, you have finally made a list of all the things to sell before moving to your new home. Where do you sell them?

  • Get in touch with your local pawnshop
  • Look for any consignment shops in your neighborhood
  • Go on Craigslist
  • Connect with an Amazon representative for used/refurbished goods
  • Social media
  • You can always organize a “raid my closet” party for your friends and neighbors
  • Look for any takers in local colleges, universities, and flea markets
  • Go online and look for any buyback programs

What About Those Items That Just Won’t Sell?

There are always going to be a few items that nobody wants to buy. It’s not that they are useless but they just don’t quite “fit in.” You can always donate those items to your nearest charity or church. People often organize garage sales as well where they let a majority of their items go for a very reasonable amount.
You can do that too. So now you know what you can keep and what you can sell before you move out of your old home. Now let’s make a list of the stuff to buy when moving into a new home. Yay!
